Those who know developer Tim Pappas speak highly of him. Pappas, CEO of Pappas Enterprises, has done much to earn their respect, most recently in the development of the Macallen Condominiums in Boston. The building, which is the first residential LEED Gold-certified building in New England, is the subject of a documentary, The Greening of Southie, which presents the struggles that the developers and crew faced in realizing a green building in conservative South Boston. In a telling scene from the film, an experimental non-toxic glue has failed, causing freshly installed bamboo flooring to warp and buckle. The wood has to be replaced, and Pappas asks, How much oil was burned bringing this renewable wood to Boston? The moment shows Pappas s attention to detail, his eagerness to develop new sustainable design techniques, and his holistic view of green architecture, all of which are manifested in the Macallen condos. Carl Galioto, Skidmore, Owings Merrill s partner-in-charge of the firm s New York Technical Group, and Paul Seletsky, SOM s director of digital design, are two of the architecture profession s leading experts on BIM: building information modeling (also commonly referred to as virtual design and construction)
The pair discuss how BIM facilitated a major redesign of the Freedom Tower; assess the technology s strategic impact on the profession; address common misperceptions; explain BIM s potential benefits for smaller practices; point out how BIM can lead to increased compensation for architects; and lay out the potential ramifications of BIM both positive and negative on the architect s overall role in the realization of buildings ( I believe this moment is a very critical hinge in the history of the practice of architecture and that architects do have the abil

Firm Award: Pugh +Scarpa Architects 05/2009 Known for community service, environmental stewardship, and inventive craft, materials, and forms, this is a firm whose time has come. By Jane F. Kolleeny
Cool best describes this year s AIA Firm of the Year, Pugh +Scarpa Architects. It speaks to the casual, unpretentious character of its work, which masks the refinement underlying what appears so easygoing. It also refers to the Pop Art, experimental dimension of its designs. One of the firm s best-known projects, the Solar Umbrella, exemplifies these traits. Home to married partners Lawrence Scarpa, FAIA, and Angela Brooks, AIA, this small renovation in an unremarkable Venice, California, neighborhood brings a 650-square-foot stucco bungalow from the 1920s to life. The architects built a two-story addition topped by a lightweight canopy composed of solar panels. The new structure sits weightlessly on top of a delicate base of tilt-up concrete; inside, funky contemporary furnishin

In 1890, Seth Low, Columbia's president, championed the relocation of that small college from Midtown Manhattan to Morningside Heights far to the north. When donors balked at the expense, Low decided to lead by example. He pledged $1 million to build a library to anchor the new location. The building would honor his father, a tea trader and owner of a fleet of clipper ships. Low Memorial Library is the centerpiece of McKim, Mead and White's 1894 master plan and is still regarded by many as the most prominent building on campus. Charles McKim designed the library to be constructed entirely of masonry, without a steel superstructure. It is Greek-cross shaped

Across the country, design-centered high schools are helping increase the number of African-Americans and Latinos in the field By James Murdock
Shortly after the 9:30 a.m. bell sounds, the 24 students in Michael Reingold s Drawing Foundations class begin sketching a classmate who has gamely agreed to model for them, an off-white sheet draped over her blue top and khaki pants. The week s lesson is on gesture, so Reingold encourages pupils to make as few pencil lines as possible before using charcoal to block out shape and shadow. It s a commonplace assignment in an introductory college art studio except that these students are 14 and 15 years old, freshmen at the Charter High School of Architecture and Design (CHAD) in Philadelphia. Architects assigned to create an addition to an existing structure often face a delicate task. The original work is revered not only for its history but for its craftsmanship, materials, and quality of design. Happily this was not the case with the $135 million Arena Stage at the Mead Center for American Theater in Washington, D.C. The two theaters at Arena Stage the 683-seat Fichandler (1961) and the 514-seat Kreeger (1971) both designed by Chicago architect Harry Weese provided significant theatrical contributions to the nation s capital. But they could not be described as Weese s shining moment, on the level of his concrete coffered, vaulted Washington Metro stations that opened in 1976. Advertising -Related links

The design team self-initiated this project with the purpose of preparing a comprehensive proposal for an area located immediately south of the historic downtown of Santa Fe. The 120 acre site has been identified as significantly underutilized and offers a challenging but excellent case study for sustainable infill development in northern New Mexico. While Sante Fe often prides itself on its comprehensive planning ordinances, progressive environmental policies, and unique preservation legacy, this project provides an opportunity to reexamine the role of urbanism, architecture and coding in 21st century Santa Fe. The smartest, sharpest, most surprising and most fashionable fashion issue out there. Video Cedric Price, Autumn Gets Me Badly, 6 November 1989 Architecture
Cedric Price is a bit of a legend over here at W* HQ. Not just for the small body of work the visionary architect and all round big-thinker actually ended up producing in his lifetime, but more for his radical methodology and the way it has influenced the likes of contemporary architects such as Richard Rogers and Sir Norman Foster, and sowed the conceptual seeds for important landmarks such as the London Eye and Paris' Centre Pompidou. This is of the videos featured in the Architectural Association Gallery's 'Wish We Were Here' exhibition. The archival footage is taken from lecture by Cedric Price from 6 November 1989. Through a selection of films, drawings and photographs, the show looks to convey Price's fascination with human nature, and inherently reaffirms the revolutionary architectural and sociological ideas that made him very much a man ahead of his time. If you follow the prevailing Washington metaphors, the United States sounds like a nation of frustrated drivers. We need a road map for everything from the Middle East to Afghanistan to health care. But to the McLean, Virginia, architect Dennis Findley, AIA, we re actually more like clients with a tricky building project. Instead of a road map, he would like us to consider a napkin sketch.
It s that simple description that makes everything make sense, he says of a quick drawing done on whatever paper is at hand. It establishes the basis for executing anything from a small home renovation to a $50 million building on a difficult site.
An alum of Harvard s Graduate School of Design, Findley has a diverse portfolio that includes an Atlanta natural history museum and an embassy in Algeria. With napkins firmly in hand, he now is aiming to put his architecture skills to new use in Washington. He recently announced

New work on an old house necessarily follows the original text. An archaeological site, original doorknobs and windows, floorboards and foundations become artifacts, embodying history. Every building, made up of thousands of parts, demands thousands of decisions. Whose decisions were they originally? Which ones are worth keeping? When an existing house in this case, by the notable Modernists Marcel Breuer, Richard Neutra, and Rudolph Schindler speaks louder than its new designers can, each step forward encounters a host of potential problems. Are you doing it? During last January's Technology in Construction conference in Orlando, Florida, designers posed that question to each other about building information modeling (BIM) long billed as the technological sine qua non for efficient and cost-effective design and construction. But most designers, it seems, are taking a wait-and-see attitude about BIM\interested in its benefits, but hesitant to adopt it unless assured of a return on the significant investment it entails. Nearly 10 years after his seminal book, The Digital Architect, was published, architect Ken Sanders weighs in on the BIM discussion.

Art Advisor Wendy Cromwell presents "Living with Art "
Manhattan-based art advisor Wendy Cromwell has collaborated on residential interiors with architects and designers to create meaningful art collections of lasting value that also complement extraordinary design. Living with art is personal, and the process of collecting takes time. When is the right moment to begin an art collection: at the start of a design project or once it has been completed? Ms. Cromwell will consider these different approaches as it relates to two recently completed projects, while discussing the practical aspects of helping collectors live with art. 6-8 pm. Free. One of Denver's most posh neighborhoods has been split by plans to demolish a home and an effort to save it using a landmark preservation ordinance that City Councilman Charlie Brown describes as "real estate terrorism.
The conflict began this summer when Gary Yourtz paid $1.1 million for a house in the Belcaro neighborhood and pulled a demolition permit, planning to build his dream house at 825 S. Adams St.
His plans were stalled when a preservationist and a neighbor used a provision of a city law enacted four years ago to file an eleventh-hour landmark

What a mess! Every day as we head to and from our offices atop Penn Station, we push through swarms of harried commuters, disoriented tourists, and fast-moving New Yorkers in the multilevel, underground purgatory that serves Amtrak, the Long Island Rail Road, New Jersey Transit, and six different lines of the city s subway system. As nearly everyone knows, this artificially lighted, soul-sapping labyrinth replaced the soaring architecture of McKim, Mead White s Pennsylvania Station, which opened in 1910 and fell to the wrecking ball 53 years later. It s ironic that the offices of Architectural Record reside in a dreary building on the site of perhaps the greatest architectural crime of the 20th century. In the September 1968 issue of Architectural Record, a rendering showed Madison Square Garden and Two Penn Plaza, which now sit atop Penn Station. sponsore

Canberra, Australia Colleges that experience rapid rises in enrollment often resort to drastic housing measures: They put students in motels for months, or crowd three or four students into dorm rooms designed for two.
But at the Australian National University here, booming international enrollment and a high proportion of out-of-town students prompted an unusual rapid response: The university built a residence hall out of stacked shipping containers. It was the first such project in Australia, and one of few in the world.
The new facility, known as the was constructed as part of a dormitory complex called Ursula Hall. The Laurus Wing opened in three stages in 2010 with 161 studios, seven handicapped-accessible rooms, and 24 L-shaped one-bedroom units made from one and a half containers each. The rooms, intended for graduate students, range from 237 to 377 square feet. Also

Zaha Hadid Architects has designed a 921,832-square-foot speculative office and retail complex in Dubai for Omniyat Properties. Called the Opus, it consists of three, 305-foot-tall towers that appear as a single cube with a 98-foot-wide, blob-shaped opening that pierces the buildings like a donut hole. The idea is to create an opening to the city and to frame these views with a free-form void that has been eroded from the solidity of the building, Hadid explains. Observant Chicagoans will note the aesthetic similarities between Near North Apartments, the Murphy/ Jahn-designed building in the city s Near North neighborhood that opened in March, and the architect s four-year-old student housing project at the Illinois Institute of Technology. Like State Street Village dormitory, Near North is a curvilinear wedge of a building a giant bread loaf whose raked angles create a memorable presence along the streetfront. Both buildings have reinforced concrete structures with facades clad primarily in corrugated stainless steel and lined with punched windows to create what Murphy/Jahn principal architect Scott Pratt calls a cellular expression of the building. Historic preservation was not invented to bedevil property owners.
It is usually thoughtfully crafted policy by which communities and/or their individual neighborhoods can protect and preserve specific buildings or entire neighborhoods that have unique and special attributes, giving an area a distinctive character.
In the 40-plus years that preservation has been a force in Colorado, historic preservation has often been the defense against rampant bulldozing and scrape-offs. It can bring some protection to a neighborhood when a developer comes charging in and rips down a perfectly good house, in peaceful relationship to its neighbors, and builds a monster that dwarfs all around it.
That lower downtown thrives, and that we have an abundance of appealing and distinctive neighborhoods, are due in large part to the preservation movement. It was fueled in t

Barbie, the doll, was born fully developed as Barbara Millicent Roberts in New York City at the American International Toy Fair, on March 9, 1959. Although she never lacked a stylish wardrobe, not until Barbie turned 50 did she get her own house in Shanghai, China. The six-story temple devoted to this diminutive icon cost less than $10 million and is the first flagship store in the world designed just for Barbie and related products. Why Shanghai? Mattel, Barbie s owner and creator, has faced disappointing returns in the U.S. where sales of Barbie fell 15 percent in 2007. Worldwide gross sales for the second quarter of 2009 are also down 15 percent. No wonder a potential 1.3 billion customers in China, where the retail market is reportedly strong, appeals to Mattel. We were hoping to find Siyolo Mdikili, Ndzuzo Mrawuzeli and Lindile Mgcoki, three of the under-12 soccer players we had befriended in the early 90s when our paths intersected on Khayelitshas sandy elementary-school fields. With reliable avenues for communication (mail service, cell phones, internet) emerging only slowly in Khayelitsha over the past 18 years, it has been nearly impossible for us to stay in touch. The building, which was dismantled and re-erected in Vienna, is now being restored and adapted by the Belvedere gallery. In September it will reopen to show post-1945 Austrian art. Known as the 20er Haus (Twentieth House) it was designed in a Modernist style by Austrian architect Karl Schwanzer for the Brussels expo. The simple, box-like pavilion originally comprised an open ground floor (40m x 40m) with a central courtyard and a glassed-in upper gallery. After the Worlds Fair, the structure was transported to Vienna and in 1962 it was re-erected south of the city centre, near the Upper Belvedere palace. The pavilion, in Arsenalstrasse, then served as a venue for the display of post-1900 art until its collection was moved to the Museum Moderner Kunst [Mumok] in the museums quarter in 2001.The 20er Haus was then tran

The Art Newspaper -Tuesday 8 Mar 11 Stop and Gogo Not everyone in the Greek art world was thrilled with the opening of mega-dealer Larry Gagosians Athens outpost this month. According to Greek newspaper Kathimerini, Nikolaos Damalitis a senior official in charge of the construction of the new Acropolis Museum, has complained about the pedestrianised Dionysiou Areopagitou Street being used as a makeshift car park. The street was clogged with dozens of cars last Thursday when Gagosian hosted a dinner party celebrating the gallerys opening and inaugural show, Cy Twombly: Leaving Paphos Ringed with Waves at the museums rooftop restaurant. Police should issue tickets for traffic offenders in such situations and, if that didnt happen last Thursday, then maybe there had been some kind of agreement made in advance, Damalitis said. In any case, this is something we disapprove of. Published online 7 Dec 10 (The Rookery Lobby, Chicago, remodeled by Wright in 1905 The Frank Lloyd Wright Preservation Trust opens in a new location this month in Chicago's historic The Rookery building. The centre will offer rotating exhibitions of the architect's work as well as collaborative shows with museums in the vicinity. We are exploring several programming angles, said Jim Schiefelbein, a trust board member. Its part of our vision to present and work together with both the educational and arts community in the city. The sky is the limit in terms of what we can do, especially now we have a platform. This isn't the first time Wright will have a presence in the landmark building, which is one of the city's earliest commercial skyscrapers and oldest standing high rise. One year after it opened, the architect opened a studio space in the building; six years later he remodeled The Rookery's interiors. At present around 6,000 people a year visit the building, although the trust

Graced by a network of parks that line streets whose curves celebrate the areas hills and streams, the heavily wooded residential neighborhoods are highly sought addresses. Over the years, however, intersections of arterial streets have become strip shopping centers, and the narrow winding streets are today choked with heavy traffic. The town of Tsawwassen has too-high a housing cost, as a result of a homogeneous dominance of large-lot, single-family housing. This justifies an expansion into farmland to accommodate additional housing. The urban expansion connects the town of Tsawwassen with the adjacent resort village of Boundary Bay on the west and the east of the site, and the U.S. border to the south. The existing farm is of mediocre soil quality and is currently dedicated to low-value crops. It is crossed by the road to Boundary Bay and has a system of drainage canals.
The basic premise of Agricultural Urbanism is that when farmland is built upon, one third will be urbanized while the production of the whole will be tripled. This is achieved by intensifying the agricultural activity across the Transect, from window boxes, balcony and roof gardens in the more urban Transect Zones, to the progressively larger community gardens, yard gardens, small farms, and ultimately large farms in the more suburban and rural Transect Zones.
The condition specified in the Association Document is that

Backed by studies showing that middle-class Seattle residents can no longer afford the city's middle-class homes, consensus is growing that prices are too darned high. But why are they so high?
An intriguing new analysis by a University of Washington economics professor argues that home prices have, perhaps inadvertently, been driven up $200,000 by good intentions.
Between 1989 and 2006, the median inflation-adjusted price of a Seattle house rose from $221,000 to $447,800. Fully $200,000 of that increase was the re

The Art Newspaper -Tuesday 8 Mar 11 Tate bigwig looks to the BBC Congrats to Will Gompertz, the ubiquitous Director of Tate Media, who has just been appointed to the newly-created Arts Editor role at the BBC. The Art Newspaper understands that Gompertz beat off strong competition within the BBC to land the plum post which will embrace a wide range of projects. These include working with the Public Catalogue Foundation to help improve access to the UK's 200,000 publicly owned oil paintings. Broadcasting could also be part of the arts supremo's remit but this new TV presenting stint should be no problem for Gompertz who often treads the boards as a stand-up comedian (he recently appeared at the Edinburgh Fringe in his one man show, Double Art History) so talking to the nation should be a piece of cake compared to a few drunken hecklers. In the course of looking for topics for this column, I come across some interesting little snippets that give us an insight into what life was like in Brooklyn and New York City, a hundred years ago. I recently came across this short article called Architecture and Servants, in the Real Estate Record and Guide, January 28, 1893: The importance of the servant girl as a factor in our modern life is illustrated in no better way than in the effect she has on the planning and construction of the modern dwelling house. It is not enough that the quarters allotted to the domestics have been immeasurably improved in the last ten years; nobody begrudges them that, but their demands extend to the other parts of the house and must be complied with or they will leave, and this last threat has been enough to assure the fulfillment of their demands. Possibly the most startling of the dominance of the servant girl is to be found in the entire abandonment of the idea introduced a few years ago of havi

High-school graduation rates in Ontario have increased across the province, Premier Dalton McGuinty announced Tuesday.
At a news conference held at George Harvey C.I. in Toronto, McGuinty said graduation rates have risen in each of the last six years, going from 68 per cent in 2003-04 to 81 per cent in 2009-10.
The rise in graduation rates means about 72,000 more students are earning their high-school diplomas then they were six years ago. McGuinty said the province's Specialist High Skills Majors program has helped boost the graduation rate.
The program allows students to focus their studies on a specific area relevant to their career interests. There are now more than 1,000 such programs

But in a surprise move, Hungarys right-of-centre Fidesz party comprehensively rejected the scheme last month and is understood to want an extension above ground necessitating a new round of tenders.According to sources close to the museum, its director Laszlo Baan was only made aware of the decision a few days before it was announced. Staff have privately expressed their distress at hearing the news, while other arts professionals in the city are concerned about the effect the intervention will have on Budapests international standing. Coming up roses (and other flowers) Floral motifs give shape to remarkable products By Mark Curtis
Floral patterned upholstery for chairs and sofas is fairly common, but rarer is the entire seat directly inspired by a flower shape. When such designs appear, though, the result is usually remarkable.
The classic modern example is Finnish American designer Eero Saarinens 1956 Tulip chair for American furniture manufacturer Knoll. The chairs elegantly reduced composition of stem and seat mimics the understated elegance of the tulip flower.
The Knoll chair, still in production, combines a base and stem of coated cast aluminum with a seat shell of moulded fibreglass with a plastic bonded finish. An upholstered foam seat pad is fastened with a Velcro strip. Shell colours include the original white, plus newer choices of black or platinum. Available with or without arms and with a fixed or swivel base, Saarinens mid-20th century design is a familiar modern classic. The flower-inspired designs also include a series of dining, coffee, and side tables.
The architects building work endures as well; Saarinens famous architecture includes the Gateway Arch in St. L

Ask any architect about the genesis of their work and they'll usually say something about the importance of drawing. In the digital era, the sketch is perhaps the last bridge between the architect and artist, an umbilical cord that reasserts their claims to creativity. Architects' Sketchbooks is a new monograph that brings together the thoughts, squiggles, sketchbooks and first drafts of a huge number of prominent contemporary practitioners. Contributors include ,Alessandro Mendini, Narinder Sagoo, and .
The term 'sketch' is pretty loosely interpreted. Some of the imagery is computer-generated, some of it is three-dimensional models, some painting and collage. Working methods are rarely laid completely bare, but aptitude and spatial sense is more apparent in some entries than others. Shigeru Ban's precise diagrams for the Centre Pompidou-Metz imply the formal elaboration was already fixed and immutable, while Will Alsop's characteristically abstract paintings give little indication of architectural form. Other examples are most linear, like th
